Editorial policy

How we decide what to publish.

Answer the question. Show the evidence. Earn the enquiry.

What a page must do

A page is published when it helps a specific reader make a decision, when its material claims have sources, when it adds something beyond an existing page, when its geography and service availability are honest and when someone owns keeping it current. We do not publish pages to reach a page count, and we do not create a page for every combination of service and place.

Business facts

  • Services, base and service area are checked against the business's own published pages. The checked date is shown.
  • A business's statements about response times, process and results are quoted as its statements.
  • We do not publish prices as market averages. A provider's published price is shown only with its scope and date.
  • We do not invent reviews, ratings, awards, years in business, offices or credentials, and we do not show "verified" badges that mean nothing.
  • Where facts conflict or cannot be confirmed, we say so on the profile rather than choosing the more flattering version.

Three kinds of coverage

A business profile is a factual description of a provider. A partner feature is openly promotional coverage of an affiliated or sponsoring business. An editorial comparisonevaluates providers against disclosed criteria with meaningful alternatives. We do not present one as another.

Comparisons and "best" lists

We publish a ranked or "top" list only when we have researched the candidate pool, can explain the method and have enough verified providers to make the comparison meaningful. If only three providers qualify, we list three. An affiliated business is not ranked first because it is affiliated, and a competitor can be the better choice for a particular reader. Where we cannot compare fairly, we publish a factual directory instead.

Relationships

Relationships are labelled beside the content they affect, not only on this page. See ownership and sponsorship.

Authorship and dates

Guides show their author and their published and updated dates. We change the updated date when the content changes materially, not to appear fresh.

Corrections

Anyone can request a correction. We review it against sources and note material corrections on the page.

Artificial intelligence and automation

Drafting, link checking and stale-fact alerts may be assisted by software. Comparative judgments, claims about businesses and publication decisions are reviewed by a person. We do not place hidden text or instructions for automated systems on our pages.
